With Names Like Correa and Turner Off The Market, Peraza or Volpe Have Clear Path To Be Yankees Everyday Shortstop

With names like Correa and Turner off the market, only a few names remain. It's now safe to say The Shortstop position is for the taking for either Volpe or Paraza. They now have a clearer path to become The Yankees everyday Shortstop.

Let's talk about The New York Yankees top prospect Anthony Volpe, who is almost ready to make the jump to the major leagues, according to Vice President of Player Development Kevin Reese. The 21-year-old shortstop, who graduated from Delbarton High School and currently resides in Watchung, ranks 10th on Baseball America's top 100 prospects list.

Volpe had an alright 2022 season, hitting .251 with 18 home runs, 60 RBIs, and an OPS of .820 in 110 games at Double-A Somerset before being promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he hit .236 with three home runs in 22 games.

The Yankees selected Volpe in the first round of the 2019 draft out of high school. He has already reported to the team's player development complex in Tampa, where he is preparing for a spring training shortstop competition with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Oswald Peraza.

According to Reese, Volpe is physically "knocking on the door" of the majors. "Depending on who you ask, he's ready yesterday, he's ready tomorrow," Reese said. "He's a great kid who is always looking to help the team any way he can and he's ready."

Reese praised Volpe's combination of general skills and ability on the field, as well as his calm demeanor. "Like Peraza, he's stolen a ton of bases, he's hit for power, he fits in with whatever group it is – players from different backgrounds, even pitchers, who position players don't like hanging out with too much. He hits in really well and I think he'll fit in on the big-league club when the time comes."

It remains to be seen when Volpe will make his major league debut, but it appears that it is only a matter of time. Yankees fans will be eagerly awaiting his arrival and will be hoping that he can make an impact at the highest level.
